Default Surname Issue for my mom

Folks,
Need some help here.
My dad and mom are planning to visit to US. They are about to go to Chennai for interview. My dad has both Surname and First/given name in passport. So, accordingly he filled the document DS156.
But for my mom, in passport, she has only First/Given name but "no" surname. Surname section is empty.
So, in DS156 form, that section is left empty.

Is this ok to go like this to Chennai or is there something that needs to be done. Will they both get visa or should we fix the surname for my mom.
Please advise.
thanks
madhu

Default Surname/Name issue in the passport

Madhu,

Did your mother get the visa with the surname issue? I am intending to invite my parents to US and both their passports have issues with respect to names.

In case of my father, the passport shows actual surname in the given name field and first and middle name in the surname field.

In case of my mother, it has the full name in the surname field and surname shows blank.

Any advice as to whether this should be corrected before applying for the visa would be very helpful. Also, will an affidavit be helpful in this case (if applied without correcting the passport)? Has any one got rejection/success experience in such a case?

Please help.

Thanks,
Rajesh

Default My mom's experience with last name issue

My mother got a visa (10 yrs) at chennai last week. She had an issue with her last name and i was worried too. I think lot of tamils have problem with a surname.
Her passport shows my grandfather (her dad)'s name as surname. Everywhere else she uses just an initial, but differently, the first letter of my dad's name. And the affidavit that i sent had my dad's name as surname again (I didnt realize what she had on passport).
On the safer side, I asked her to carry a notarized affidavit saying 'All these are my names, i have to use my dad/husband's name alternatively.'
Well... she didnt have to explain anything... after usual questions she got the visa. I think they understand, that sometimes people dont 'have' a surname but 'choose' one.
