Default ITIN

I am in US for more than 7 months, my wife and kid are still in India. They are planning to come to US only during February next year. Can I apply ITIN for them now before they come to US ? so that I can get exemption for them as dependents while filing tax.

Alternatively If I apply for ITIN after they come during next year can I use that number to claim exemption for this year income.

Default Re : ITIN

Dear Baniya Ji,

To get a ITIN, person has to be in the USA. They will ask you for the passport and a USA entry date.
Here is the link for a form

www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw7.pdf

Now you are in USA therefore atleast change your desi mentality.
