Other question is what is the coverage we should have so that we dont get into trouble in case of accident,

Yes most states has affordable insurance offered, in searching for good insurance. All the top insurance companies are at your fingertips on the internet. Most local agents can only quote you from the few companies that they represent. They may not offer you what is best for you financially or reliable but only what they happen to have available.

try esurance, they have low rates and are very reliable. Also, good customer service.

Ameriprise certainly gives good rates if you have a good driving history.

If you dont have history, visit several allstate or farmers agents in your neighbourood. You might think the quote you get on web would be the cheapest, but its appaently not!

Go to atleast to four insurance companies in your area personally and ask for a quote giving all the details like how long you are driving , License etc...
Ask for liability and comprehensive both; compare and then make a decision.
Few things we have to do in person still; I got some quote in the net and something else in person. More over without accident my insurance went down $450/year with Farm Bureau.

Things always look great till something goes wrong. You want to make sure that if you have a crash, the company will pay up. So don't get coaxed by the agent into entering false info to get a lower rate. Farmers agents are notorious for this. The claims adjuster will deny your claim outright. The agent wouldn't care; he would have received his commission already.

If rates are too high, buy a beat-up old car and choose liability insurance only (no collision, no comprehensive, no towing, no rental). This will cover anyone you injure, but not you or your car.

If these terms confuse you, write back and I will try to explain.
