Hi all,

My mother went to visa stamping at chennai today. Interview went well and the offcier agreed to grant visa but told her that there is discrepancy in the name given on visa application and passport and so asked her to get it changed on the passport and courier it back for stamping. The problem was, in the passport there is a blank surname whereas when i sent the ds-156, i mistakenly split the name into given and sur names. Now, they say that she needs to get her name changed in the passport by splitting the name into given and sur names as mentioned on the ds-156.
My question is - will the passport office agree to do a name change? if so, what reason should we provide other than the document the visa offcier gave her.
Please let me know at the earliest.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi,
What is her actual name? Is it the way it appears on the passport or is it the way it appears in the DS 156. If you have filled up her form and have made a mistake, then the question will arise whether you put you name in the column which asks who filled the application. Changing name on the passport is not an easy issue. Making spouse endorements, etc, can be done in a couple of days, but to change the appearance of the name itself, you have to give a notification in Official Gazette, make a public announcement, etc, and carry all this to the passport office. I think it would be fairly simple if you could write to the consulate and ask them what is the procedure if the name in the passport is correct but was wrongly filled in the DS 156, if that is the case.
But on the other hand, if her passport has the name wrongly entered, then its better to get it duly corrected in the passport.

Hi Veena, Thanks for answering.
Her name shows in the PP as XXXX YYY (Given Name) and there is no Surname, whereas in the DS-156, I had filled it wrongly as XXXX Given Name and YYY Surname. This was what caused the confusion. The consular could have easily made a correction to the DS-156 and issued the visa but did not.
Now, will the PP office spilt XXXX YYY (given name) into XXXX (given name) and YYY (surname) is the question. There is nothing added or being removed from the name but just a re-arranging is required. If they deny, can I send another DS-156 with correct name (as in PP) and also a letter to consulate stating that I had done a mistake while filling the DS-156 and the name in PP is correct and then ask my mother to re-submit the documents? Will they accept it?

Thanks,
Crwn1.

hi,
I think you should write to the Consulate and ask them what to do.
