I have been in the US for the past 5 years. I just noticed that my given name & surname in passport is interchanged. But in my visa,I-797,degree certificates & all other documents it is correct. I had stamped my visa 2 times in Chennai & never had any issues with it. Iam planning to go to India this year end & have to stamp my visa again in Chennai. While fixing appt in ttsvisas I noticed the mistake in the passport. Can anybody advise what can be done to correct the mistake in the passport? Please help.......
Thanks in advance.

I had the similar problem in march 2005
Earlier i had a valid L1 visa and i have been to US on the same.
Then later when i was preparing for my H1 appointment i noticed that my first name and last name in the passport are interchanged (By that time i had fixed my appointment with consulate in Kolkata, India).
I had applied for the name change in my passport office in Hyderabad. They had issued me a new passport( I got New passport number) in a day(It won’t take more than two days, Don’t depend on any agents go directly to the passport office carry all your academic certificates, residence proof in india and a notarized self affidavit stating that your name is xxxx yyyy zzzz(as per your academic record) you can get this affidavit near the passport office also.)
I went to the consulate with the new passport, i told the TTS guy that i had new passport and i booked the appointment with old one, he just updated the same in his sheet. When i am handling the docs and passport to the TTS guy in the interview room i just informed him that i had new passport issued. you won’t be submitting the old passport to them(unless they ask for it)
And with the interviewer he didn’t even asked/noticed anything.
It went on really cool.
And even my SSN has the wrong name and I made it corrected recently.
My advice is don’t unnecessarily expose the whole matter to them until unless they ask you for that.
Best of Luck
I thought of posting my experience long back, but I was stuck with my work. Hope this helps people

Hi,
If u are currently in US, call the Indian consulate in your state, and they will advise. You can also obtain a form online, submit the form along with the stated fees and passport in the consulate.
My husband had been in US for 5yrs, and was in the same situation as u, surname and given names not written in the right order in passport. So he went and got it corrected in the Consulate here. What they did is, they wrote the correction in the same passport in the miscellaneous page, as an observation and the passport officer signed it. We submitted it in the morning, and got the passport back in the evening.
When we filled the form, we wrote the reason in the miscellaneous section, saying that "surname and given name are not given in the right order in passport".
Hope this info helps.

We just took all other documents we had, degree certificates, H1 approval notices, birth certificate. The name on H1 which was stamped inside the passport also gave the last name and first name correctly.
The person who had written the name in my husband's passport had written his full name in the same order without separating the last name(surname) and given names...and put a bracket.
When we talked to the passport officer at the consulate regarding the matter, he did say that u should have got this corrected earlier, u're an educated person, u should know better...so and so...
but finally he agreed to correct it.
