Yes, as long as your state allows it to be used

Would advise to carry full auto-insurance coverage when you are still new in US.

Hi,
I failed road test seven times and got it on the eighth try:D
Dont worry. You can drive with International Indian License but have updated Insurance; State farm and Farm Bureau give insurance for Indian Licenses.

Which state you are in? In some states like NJ you don't require to attend the road test in case you have a valid license in India.

I have a valid International license from India. Do I need to give the knowledge test in NJ ? Do I also need the SSN to apply for the NJ DL ? What do I need to do so that I am able to drive ?

To answer your questions:

Do I need to give the knowledge test in NJ ?
Yes, you cannot get a New Jersey license without knowledge test.

Do I also need the SSN to apply for the NJ DL ?
This is not required for all visas. Some types of visas (H4 I think) are not required to have a SSN in US. They will still need to get a letter from the Social Security Office.
