HI ,

I am not sure if this is the correct place to post this question.

My parents got their 10 yr visa recently and are visiting USA next week. They are flying through Lufthansa. I heard that recently its been told not to lock luggages. Is that true. SHould i ask them to lock the luggage or not?

Thanks

yes , they started doing from begining of 2003 or late 2002.

Now some times they allow locks but u should be there during the screening processes , if they suspect , u should be available to pass the key and after the security pass u can lock it again.

I recall in when i travelled last time(2004) , i didn't locked(didn't lost anything) but u should watch out for u items.people steal every where ,it doesn't matter it's india, germany , paris or USA.

good luck ..

As far as i have heard from others(also i just came back to US by North West airlines) they do not allow locks if your are departing from US but if you are departing from india they allow you to put locks but u should have the keys readily avaiable incase they tell you to open the bag while screening.

What you can do is buy TSA approved locks (you get them in most luggage stores) and put those on your bags. Baggage screening agents in the US have keys to them so are able to unlock them and search the bags if needed and relock them (they leave a little note inside your bag that it has been searched).

I travelled Lufthansa couple of years ago, and had locked my bags both ways. On the way back ( I found out after reaching home), one of the bags was opened (lock broken) and searched. There was a printed letter inside saying my bag was searched at Frankfurt (travelled B'lore to SFo), and nothing was taken, and if anything was missing, to call a certain no. Luckily I did not have to use that no.
