I tried scheduling an online appointment and the earliest date I was getting was August 17th. After reading through this discussion board I found that somebody suggested to go directly to the VFS center and apply personally and offline. My parents did that and they got 6th July appointment date. I know it was a hassle for the person going there because they had to wait about 3-4 hours before the number came, but anybody can go and submit papers on your behlaf so may be its not that bad.
So if you guys are in real hurry I would suggest that you do that.
And yes this discussion board has been very helpful. Thanks a lot.

VFS' are centers in places like Pune, Ahmedabad etc for people who are eligible to apply for a visa at the Mumbai consulate.
You can go fix up an appointment at their office in person (for visa interview) instead of taking it online.
It has been noticed by a lot of people on this forum (including me) that if you get an appointment thru VFS in person (rather than online), you often get dates much before what you'd get online.
I don't think Chennai has any such option. I think you have to take an appointment online. If you book whatever date you are getting and keep looking for cancelled slots before that date, I am sure you'll find something more suitable.
Good luck!

the problem netra12 and I have is that there are no availability till aug 31st in chennai if you are requesting a translator. the calendar for sep is not open. hence we are not able to get any appointment, forget modifying it.
is VFS same as ttsvisas' office? I know ttsvisa has several offices in south india including chennai, bangalore and hyderabad. can we try getting an appointment by visiting one of these offices in person?

You know what? First call up ttsvisa in Chennai or email them (their phone numbers are on their website) and find out if you can get an offline appointment by visiting their local offices.
They would be able to help you best.
