Customs in Mumbai ??

Hi, I'm travelling to Chennai from NewYork, by AirIndia. Is it mandatory to collect my baggages at Mumbai and do customs in Mumbai ?? or can I do customs directly at Chennai itself, without worrying about my baggages in Mumbai ?

I had my parents last year in AirIndia (through france) and they checked in the baggages at Chennai airport and collected it at NJ airport. While returning back to India also, they didn't even have to go to domestic airport in mumbai. They got the conencting flight in International airport itself to chennai and did the customs in chennai.
But it is always good to check with travel agents or the airlines (From whom you got the ticktes)
