Renewing passport in the USA

Hi,

My passport expires in May 2005. I have a B1/B2 valid till 2014. Would it be feasible for me to visit the US on a B1, and then apply for my passport renewal at an Indian Consulate (New York, in my case) there?

Normally how much time do the consulate people take? Would it be faster than in India, where I'm getting stuck in red tape and my project needs me onsite asap? My employer would be paying for my travel/stay/expenses anyways.

Yes you can get it done here in US as well.
Normally it takes 2-3 weeks depends where you are applying.
Example in SFO , I got my renewal done in 3 working days.
So you may wnat to call them and discuss and then decide.
