Hi,
I'm new to US and I'm in Durham, NC now.
Last week I went for driving written test,cleared the test and got Learner's Permit (Of course I've SSN and other documents).
Now I've to Road Driving Test.
But I was informed that in order to take the road test I've to have Proof of Insurance.
I remember some of my friends had got the lincese without insurance and went for insurance only after they got the license and bought a car.

So I'm not sure whether I'm in right direction or mis led here.
Must I've to have insurance to obtain license.

Also DMV office was suggesting that I can get a Liability / Non-owner's insurance from some of the insurance companies such as Gieco, Progressive which will not have vehicle number in this kind of policy and policy can be changed once I buy a car.

If anyone have any idea abt this pls shed some light.

Thanks in advance.

Hi!

As far as I know, the vehicle you bring to the road test should be insured and registered and you don't need insurance for yourself, at that point of time...well, atleat that's the law in most states, not so sure about NC...
why don't you call the DMV numbers and find out for sure?

If it is required for you to have liability insurance when you take the road test, I'm sure they'll mention it when they confirm your road test appointment too..

Thanks.
Actually I called DMV office and checked with them.
They were the asked for Proof Of Insurance. I really don't want to pay that much amt till the time I buy a car.

Following is copied from NC state DMV hadnbook

Financial Responsibility:
--------------------------
The N.C. General Assembly has enacted legislation to require some (but not all) driver license applicants in North Carolina to submit proof of automobile liability insurance coverage in order to obtain a North Carolina driver's license. Proof of liability insurance coverage applies to those:
• Applying for an original license, including transfers from out–of–state;
• Whose licenses are being restored after revocation or suspension; or
• Awarded a “Limited Privilege" license by the court.
Certification of liability insurance coverage must be submitted on DMV Form DL-123, or an original liability insurance policy, binder or certificate of insurance.

These documents must show:
• Applicant’s name;
• Effective date of policy;
• Expiration date; and
• Date the policy was issued
Form DL-123, binders and certificates are valid only for 30 days from the date of issuance
and must be from an insurance company licensed to do business in North Carolina.
Individuals covered by the required liability insurance law, but who do not own or operate a
currently registered motor vehicle will be required to sign a certification of exemption at
the driver license office (DL-123A). The exemption restricts the driver to the operation of “Fleet Vehicles Only". To remove the restriction the driver must pay a $10.00 fee and submit DMV Form DL-123.
