Urgent information reqd (debt collection liability)

Hi,

I want to sponsor my brother for tourist visa but he has some outstanding debt on his credit cards from his last visit to US which was some 7 yrs ago when he was working in US. He then left to India due to some medical emergency and now wants to come visit USA.

Is it possible that if my brother is unable to pay off his debt, I might be asked to do so by the debt collection agencies?

Is there some good Lawyer in NJ/NY area whom I can consult regarding this?

You are not responsible for your brother's existing debt. Perhaps he should consider using the funds he would use on his trip to repay the debt he took on when he was here before. It would be the MORAL and RESPONSIBLE thing to so. If he is coming to lacate another job, he should realize that some companies - especially good ones - will do credit as well as criminal background checks as will apartrments and lenders. In todays economy, a deadbeat will not get a car loan or a credit card and may have difficulty getting a place to live.
