Change Status

Hi..I have a friend taht came to the usa around 2000 with a tourist visa. He stayed a while and changed his status to F1 student visa. After he finished his studies he still stayed but did not change his status. Now hes time has expired for his F1 visa. what can my friend do?..is there a way he can change his status without going out of usa? can he get permanent residence or something to work legally or stay legally in usa??..

As student visa has a OPT card for a year. And if you freind's Visa as well as OPT card has expired and it is 60 days also up after his visa or OPT has expired it is not valid to stay in USa. He should leave the country or he will be in 3/10 bar. while states that if you stay illegal you can come under this bar and for 3 to 10 years stating how much time you are illeagal with detramine you will not get a new visa.

OK so my friend has to get out of the country..so can he like go out to other country other than the one he came from..can he do that?..thanks
