H4 -H1 status transfer

hi all,
Actuly i had applied for H1 from USA and got it approved for this year(2007).But in my petition my I94 status was not specified by the USCIS even though we had sent the I94 paper along with all the other documents during H1 B filing.Some how USCIS have missed my I94 status and i had received
I797B instead of I797A.So we had reapplied for the ammendment petition(I797A) by sending the I94 paper again.In this regard my case is still pending with USCIS.So I would like to know if I could apply for SSN showing them the I797B along with the receipt of amendment petition for I797A.Is it possible to do this or should I wait till i get the approval of amendment paper to apply for SSN?...
Someone plz reply to my query as it is very urgent.

No u do need a COS approval to get SSN. SSN office will have still ur status as H4. once its approved, SSN office system will also get changed to H1.
