Hi..............
I hope this is the same Priya...who has posted the other comment about the Hanuman temple....was so overjoyed to see (hear) someone already in the position I am going to be in soon! Yes...and in the Twin Cities too.
My husband is a s/w sales guy....and we are to reach there in July....well, if the INS blesses!
I am in market research here...and also looking at an H4 prospect...no clue what to do...sitting at home seems ...oh, dreary(?)......would really like to talk (mail) someone in the same predicament (is that what it's called?)!!!
......so, write soon.......Preeti

Hi,
I am on H4 too since April of last year. Initially, I was thinking of sitting at home as a break from the hectic schedule I had back in India.
But now, it is getting to me.
It does seem like a waste of colossal waste of all my education.(I am a BE).
As I understand, you can only volunteer on H4.
Studying further is another option I am considering these days.

well I can have some interesting ideas for you, why dont you people start a YAHOO GROUP, where in you can share a bunch of information about your experiences, be it any experience and then try to help each other. Its just another way to show that you people care for each other being miles away from home.

Hi Guys,
I am another petrified H4 visa holder on my way to the US. This site came as a blessing in disguise while surfing the net. Will be really glad to know how to go about life in the US, what jobs can be done legally, and how to go about pursuing studies. I am a masters in mass communication and would like to follow the same course there too.
Please do tell me about the concept of voluntary work and how does one start from scratch.
Help needed from all quarters….:-)

i seriously dont understand why most women on H4 visa complain about their status .. Agreed that its really boring to sit at home and do nothing ... but hey as most of you say yourself that you all are extremely qualified .. so didnt you do enough research before coming here ... its not that you have been duped saying you can work on H4 and then when u come here u realise that you cant .. these days we have so many sources the main one being internet where we can find out what we are getting into ... i am not say it is not frustrating especially if you left a career back in india but constant complaining about it is no solutions .. think of so many other things that can be done to use your time constructively ... volunteering is not a bad option ... it will give you loads of experience of interacting with the locals learn about the work culture here etc ... you can pursue study ... the list of hobbies one can pursue here is endless ... there are many women on H4 especially in places like NY NJ California ... like minded people can meet and do so many things .... all one needs is an open mind ... seriously stop complaining how your education is wasted blah blah blah because you should have thought about that before coming here ....

Hi folks
It's not all about complaining. It's about expressing your feelings and concerns and even your complains. Sometimes you feel better knowing that there are people sailing in the same boat. Please don't be judgemental and rebuking. I know each one of us will eventually find our own way. Yes, the journey will be much pleasant if we are less critical.
And this is especially for all the new comers...Heyyy cheer up and feel free to express and write your heart out!!

10-23-2006, 10:18 AM
i think u guys got me all wrong ... i was not referring to people who share their thots feelings and frustrations ... i was talking abt the people who constantly say their education is wasted and its soooooooo unfair to them that they have to sit at home and do nothing when they had an awesome career back home ... i feel its unfair on their part to even say that ... i am a postgrad from india and words cannot express how homesick and depressed i was when i first came here ... i am not against people writing/talking about missing home/family/food/friends ... as someone said it feels good to know that we arent the only one and there are lots of people here sharing similar feelings & experiencing boredom ... but i dont sympathise with women who feel they r bored here as 'THEY CANNOT GO TO WORK' like they used to back in India ... that is something they themselves knowingly got into ..

Ladies,
Your education will be wasted even if you work in the US. Work culture in the US is very relaxed and laid back, so you are not missing too much by staying home.
And if all of you with MBA's begin to flood the job market, what'll happen to guys like me who wasted 1000's of $'s getting an MBA from a US univ. when you got yours real cheap from india??

Gals, gud to see so many like minded ppl sailing on the same boat as me :D
well, we could all use our energy and time positively. This thread was actually started to allow us to "work collectively to do something positive", right?
So, lemme start myself, we can improve our cooking skills- learn various other forms of cooking, start reading books and novels--well may be these are things which you people might already have been doing before me posting it here too.Anyways, this was just to start.I ahve posted my ideas and would love to hear from you all too.
We can also dicuss about the procedures which we should follow during the conversion of our visa status from H4 to H1-like when will the paper work start, when can we start preparing for interviews,we can we start applying for work, etc.
Think about it,instead of searching for some yahoo groups or mabbe in addition to that, we can always use this medium to post our ideas, right.
keep smiling :)

Hello everyone, I had a question on the above subject.
I understand that many spouses who come to the US on a H4 visa can get status changed to H1b to start working. my question is....it was seen that the cap finished rapidly within 2 months last year. Its difficult to find a company which will sponsor a h4 visa holders visa in
april/may/june and wait for them till October 1st for them to begin work (am i right with this assumption?).
Now i know inthe IT field..this is circumvented by getting the h1b sponsored by some IT consultancies....who just sponsor the h1b and then start giving projects in October (or the person can transfer the h1b to another company in the meantime since it has been approved already anyway).
My question is..are there similar opportunities for non-IT people...ie H4's who have done MBA, Finance, Accounting (CA) etc..???
please advise..I would be grateful for any suggestion received.
lakxmiraj
11-02-2006, 09:16 PM
well, i dont think people who try to get their visa chnaged from h4 to h1b in march/april/may might need to wait till october to start working.Once the visa gets changed and once you can manage to get a job, you can start working before october too.For non IT people, i guess instead of approaching consultancies, you need to search for companies who can offer your job and then sponsor your H1 visa too.
Correct me someone if i am wrong.Always willing to correct mistakes and gather more knowledge :)

Hi,
My name is Deepa. I am also on H4 visa and have been living in upstate NY for about 3 years. I also found it very hard in the beginning with absolutely nothing to do. Later I found out that you can voluntary go and work for libaries here. Even though you don’t earn any cash, I am atleast not sitting idle and also at the same time have made some good friends. Morever because I work in the library, I get free tickets for cetain functions, get free books which they usually sell for low prices. Hope this helps other people like me.
Bye,
Deepa

Hiye!!!
How's everybody doing? Well, its very easy to figure out how yahoo group works. Go to groups.yahoo.com. A quick glance through the web-page is very self-explainatory. To get a hang of it just click on a group that interests you and follow the simple instructions that the moderator wants you to follow.
If you get approved by the moderator then Huraayy!! You shall recieve an e-mail with a registration link. Click on it and the job's done. You become a registered member of the group.
However, if you want to start your own group then follow the step-by-step procedure. Get started by inviting friends to join the group. Just give it a try now....:-)
Cheers

Hiyeeee!!
Whazzz up!! Ok, so folks want to know where I live...Hmmh guys I live in a "Village" called Kansas City. Just moved here 3 months back from a paradise called Singapore (it atleast had a metrooooo!).
Ok, so life in the "Village" is peaceful, naaa no one will bother you, that is, in case they can spot you somewhere between the beautiful, calm, motionless nature and the never ending highways.
And don’t you ever tread the road less traveled for reasons that defy common sense. Common dude this is America no one walks here.... Evertyhing is drive thru...mmmmh smooth
I am taking the liberty of being a little philosophical:
Ladies and Gentlemen: life throws many things at you especially the ones you’ve never expected…..Uffff
So who lives in NY? What's the complaint?....:D
Enjoy

Hi Christina,
I don't know in which place u stay. I live in San Jose (CA) and here for doing a Masters it takes 2-3 yrs, unless u opt for doing online which will get over 1 year. But the fee for doing a course online is very expensive. Here we do hv some community colleges wherein they offer 1 or 2 yr course and fee structure is affordable.
I guess this is will help you,

Hi rashmi,
I am from Newyork. I am here from 4 years. But since i am on H4 visa status, I cannot work here.
About the website, yes i earned a lot of giftcards by playing in their site. It is 100% true. If you are lucky you can also get $25, $250 and above in cheques. Its easy to play too. Without investing any money but investing your free time, I think its worth the effort.

i seriously dont understand why most women on H4 visa complain about their status ..
Hi:)
I support you.Even I feel the same way.

I guess from now on it will be interesting to interact with you people.
Hope to hear from you all...

Hi everyone!
I am new to this site and glad to find a thread on dependent housewives.
I'm from Philippines and been here in the US (Delaware) for almost 3 years now and still got nothing to do -- no job, no school and no child. I've tried applying for a job but always failed to have one. :( I haven't really considered studying since I know it will cost us a lot, though right now I'm thinking this might help me get a job someday. And about the child, this is our major project so far. :)
I just wish that with this site, I'll meet friends who have the same experience as mine. And hopefully someone can give me advice on how to improve my chances on landing a job. I really need to have one but it's so difficult to find a company who is willing to sponsor a working visa. Is it really this difficult?
Thanks!

Thanks so much Febi!
I've been trying every year whenever new quota for H1B is released but I never get lucky. I worked in a bank as a SAS programmer analyst, so I tried applying in different banks here in Delaware. I'll check the website and hopefully will get something from there.
Thank you so much!

Hi Febi!
To send private messages, you have to click the name of the person you'll be sending messages. There will be a drop down, just click on "send private message".
I can see that yours is not activated. You need to go to your control panel and click on edit options. You have to check the "enable private messaging".

Hi there
I am another person on a H4 visa. Just arrived and enjoying the States so far. I have already found a place nearby to volunteer and have taken up a new exercise regime and old hobby. But its pure self-motivation as it is harder not being busy at work.
Does anyone know about an allowance for spouses of someone employed on a H1 visa? It might depend on the work contract agreed on, but if anyone has any experience with this I'd appreciate feedback.
Thanks,
Aimee

I live in Iowa not much scope here. what you gals do all day otherthen household work ? Its very hard to live in a place where you dont have to do anything, you are restricted. It seem I am only wasting my time sitting at home its realy frustating.

Hi everyone,'
I'm also on H4 visa.
I've been in America for 2 years, I live in Austin, Tx......anyone in Austin, Tx?
Can you volunteer on H4 visa for a normal company, where everybody is being paid besides me and where there are not volunteers, only me?
Does anyone know if you can volunteer legally in a company that IS NOT a non-profit organization?
Thank you in advance

Hello ladies,
I'm on H4 visa also...I've been in U.S for 2 years.....but in spite of visa restrictions I'm very strong.....optimistic and happy....I'm just thinking that, maybe, other women might be sick, or are not so fortunate like me....so when I'm doing a comparison with other women....I feel grateful for who I am, for my situation....thinking that it could have been worse....so I highly encourage every H4 visa holder to be strong, happy and to appreciate what they have right now.
If you feel bad about yourself, this could demage your mental health, you could fall into depression...and is it worth it?.....in Africa for exemple many people are starving, fighting with desease....and whatnot.
Some day it will be good, the situation will change...and the sun will be shining on our street
Good luck ladies.

Hi,
I arrived in USA in Nov 2006, after marrying my husband. I am a very good Bharat Nattiyam dancer and teacher. In India, I was teaching kids for some time, before marriage. I had performed all over India. I am an arts person, not education oriented (MBA, MS, MD, etc). I had passed only Junior College in India and spent 5 yrs exclusively learning dance only after Junior College. I am bored to be at home (my husband is a SW engr and he travels a lot). Can you please advise me the opportunities for a person like me?
Thanks

Hi Shngb,
In almost every hindu temple in US they conduct classical dance classes for kids , so contact your local hindu temple and see that they have any dance teacher vaccancies.
