Hi friends
I was going through the SSA website. I noticed that Non-citizens who do not have permission to work in USA...are allowed to apply for SSN and their card will read "Not Valid for Employment". Do any of you holding a H4 visa hold a similar Social Security Card?
My company offers health insurance benefit for me but that doesnt cover my wife...and Health Assurance, the insurance provider charges $70/week for adding my wife as dependant. It seems to be very expensive. I looked in Highmark blueshield website and they have a PPO individual plan that costs $161/month with $0 deductible; but they require a SSN. Thats the main reason i am looking to apply SSN for my wife.
Any advice or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

H4 person won't be given SSN. in 90's SSN used to issued but not anymore. Also for health coverage i don't think a company need a SSN, talk to them, they will let u know the way out. Also u can apply for TIN which can be used by medical insurance company in case they have to have some id #.

Thank you Simran for responding. Can the same TIN be used to obtain a Driver's license? Is it possible to apply for DL without SSN?

Each state DMV have its own rule. u need to contact ur state DMV for it. As far as i know TIN cannot be used for DL. But in CA, u need a letter from SSN office that a person cannot be issued a SSN. Once u have it, DMV will allow u to take exams and appear for driving test.

In CA, for drivers license you don't need SSN if candidate is NOT eligible for SSN. Just Passport with Visa stamped is enough. If you need some kind of ID before you get DL or TIN, then apply for State ID in DMV.
