Does anyone know about the procedure to collect the passport from Chennai counsolate? That is, after visa is granted, does one have to wait to collect the passport OR is it always that the passport gets couriered (if so, how many days later will one get the passport). Please reply.

Passports will NOT be delivered across the counter at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

You have the option to collect your passport across the counter at the VFS Application Centre located in the city you were interviewed.

Applicants who have appeared for an interview at the Consulate in Chennai may avail of the service between 1600-1700 hours.

It will take about 2-3 days for the passports to be ready for collection. If you live in the same town OR if you can wait in Chennai for 2-3 days after the interview, you have to check the status online once every few hours to see when the consulate hands over the passport to VFS. On the day when VFS receives the passport, they will make it available for pickup between 4Pm-5Pm at the VFS office. All the passports not collected past 5Pm will be automatically couriered.

(My parents had interview on a Thursday and their passports were made available at VFS office from 4Pm-5Pm on the following Monday which is the 3rd business day. They did not wait in Chennai for the passports, but I got this status report from VFS website online. On Monday evening after 5Pm the passport was handed over to Blue dart courier and they received the passports at their home on the Wednesday).
