I came to US 2 years back and this is where I am still lacking. I get laid off from my job in Jun'01 because I failed in doing enough buttering of my manager. I know there were so many members in my team not even 20% productive as me, but definitely I didn't butter my manager even 10% of what they did.
So, is it true that in US more than your performance, your terms with y'r manager matters. and every manager expects that you do buttering ( communication in other words)
I know lots n lots of people are there who are able to butter very nicely. Please help me..... SOME TIPS PLZ from the great butterers .... or I'll lose this one also.

US people are calorie & fat conscious. Not butter, try fat free oil instead. You’ll surely succeed.
Butter is for Indian managers. Samjha kar yaar……

Nidhi
It will always help anyone to be good to their boss...dont kiss the a** but generally see to it u spend sometime in day talking to your boss abotu general things..like kids, his family etc....
be the first one to take any project from your boss which will help your boss get a priase, let it be the silliest one.
Propoganda of your work will make you popular not being 100% productive and no body knowing about it.
Hope this helps....

Very simple solution. Always make sure you speak their native language. For example if your boss speaks a native language X, then you also learn that language. If he/she speaks lingo Y, then you also spend day and night to learn Y. This has a great AXE effect on them and you can take a job of a linguist/translator some time later :D
Didn't I say its simple?
I know this is just adding further agony to your problem... but I am just kiddin... :D

Mr. GILFAN would be telgu, so he feels there is no need to butter the manager. Other wise if u dnt butter ur manager, no matter how good u are at ur work u will never get appriciation. ANd if u r of same cast as ur manager's then u dnt need to work atall. only just speak few sentences in mother tounge and u r all set. Nothing could stop u. So the bottom line is.......get a job whr manager is of ur cast and speaks ur mother tounge :D

If you are a female no need to butter him.
Your manager himself will try to butter you!

Very well said.
Nidhi, make sure you advertize all the good work you do.
Otherwise, your boss will never know your worth.
Be assertive. Speak out at meetings. And I apologize in advance if I
have incorrectly stereotyped you, but please don't use the desi
sideways-headshake to show your agreement with others. It's just
not right, and makes us desis the object of ridicule.
(Hey, I used to do it, and I went to a swanky private university
where barely 1% of the student body was desi. So yes, it happens
to everybody.)
Bommareddi, I think Nidhi is a female, so your theory about
auto-buttering may not be correct after all :D
