Hi Well Wishers, I alongwith my wife attended interview at Mumbai consulate on 11/10/06 & got 10 years(M) visa. The VO was a American lady and she was very gentle and asked very few questions about us ,our sponsorer daughter and son who is studyng in India. We were all prepared with loads of documents contained in four folders(two for each applicant) as suggested by forum members but she saw only I-134 & was satisfied & told us to collect our passport from VFS in the evening.I am grateful to all the members of this forum who helped me with their valuable suggestions from time to time. If any body wants to know the procedure of Mumbai cosulate, I can brief him or her. Our tickets are ready & we are flying on 31/10/06 from Delhi. Thanks again. S.K.BHATTACHARYA

I would like to know the procedure followed in Mumbai consulate since my mom has an interview on the 26th Oct. My dad already has a 10 year visa (he got it in 2004).

Hi Susan, Thanks for asking.I give below the procedure in chronological order.

1) On the day of interview your mom should reach consulate atleast 1 hour earlier than the scheduled time.
2) She will be asked to stand in a line & a officer , generally indian will verify her letter of interview and HDFC receipt(applicant's copy) & a visa issuance draft of Rs. 2400/. Remember she is not allowed to carry bag or purse or makeup items etc.All the documents(visiters & sponsorer's) are to be kept in a carry bagof polythene.
3) After that she will be asked to go through a door inside consulate for security check. The line for ladies and gents are separate in security check room. Here she will be asked wheather she is carrying any cell phone or cosmatics etc. & will be searched thoroughly by ladies security guard(all Indians, can talk in Hindi). After that she will be handed over a wooden token having numbers on it.It is required to be handed over to the security at the time of getting out from the consulate.
4) After security check , she will be asked to go in a room.where she will stand in a line .Again she has to show her interview appointment letter & draft & Hdfc receipt, Here the officer will verify the papers and will hand over a paper token with numbers alongwith a counterfoil with same numbers and a envelop containing papers from VFS. Then in the same room your mom will be asked to stand in separate line for fingerprints. When her turn will come she will be asked to put her left hand fore finger first & right hand forefinger lateron over a scanner to get a finger print. Remember if the fingers are injured or bandaged , your mom won't get visa.It is very important because Indian ladies often injured their fingers during cooking or cutting vegetables. Here the officer taking fingerprints will take the envelop alongwith the paper token from your mom and will hand over the counterfoil having numbers on it to your mom. Now your mom has a wooden token, a paper token and the documents (visitor & sponsorer) kept in polythene bag.,which will be required to showto the V.O. during interview if asked. Now she will be asked to sit in the chairs kept in the same room and wait for her name or token no. to be announced on microphone speakers fitted in the room. As because the room becomes crowded & Indian ladies cannot resist chitchating , your mom should take such a seat from where she can hear the announcements clearly and rush to the window number where she is asked to attend. The windows are inside a booth where interview is taken by microphone system and each window has a number on it. There are 15 windows in Mumbai consulate.Ask your mom not to panic , americans are very good and helping.san_647

Hey Susan,
Did your mom use a translator?

Mom didnt use a translator. The VO lady didnt see any papers and since dad already has a visa - she asked mum a couple of times if my dad was alive and said "sorry we cannot give you the visa when mum said He is alive and waiting outside the consulate". I am so dejected. I am expecting a baby in December and donno what to do....
