My father is going to submit his DS156 this week, and he was wondering if he could submit documents that are from his side ie. property, dependent mom etc. now, and the sponsorship papers when he is called for interview.

Do you know if this could be done ? Are all the documents seen only at the time of interview . Please clarify.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Susma,

Yes, it is best to carry Supporting Documents. The foll. can be handy during the interview -

(1) A letter to the consulate stating the (a) Total Period of Stay (b) Planned month of Travel (c) Purpose of Travel (4) Planned places of visit etc.
in clear bullet points.

(2) An affidavit stating the reason the applicant wants to travel and stating his ties to India, such as empoyment or unmarried children, or aged parents to take care of etc and get it notarized.

(3) Bank Statements for last year.

(4) Tax returns for last year if any.

(5) Stock / Share statements and present fair market value.

(6) Mutual Find Certificates.

(7) Fixed Deposit Certificates.

(8) Original Property documents.

Apart from this if the applicant is employed, Employment Verification Letter, Pay Stubs, Business Cards, Employee ID etc. Most importantly a Leave approval letter from the employer of the applicant for the period of travel.

Well, thats about it.

And as for the submission of the documents, they see it only at the time of the interview except for Mumbai consulate. You have to send the documents 5 days ahead of the interview in case of Mumbai consulate. Please check with the consulate.

Thanks for the answers, really appreciate.
So, I will let my father submit the forms ( without supporting documents right now) , and be ready with the those documents around the time of interview. I did not know that Mumbai consulate needs those documents few days before the interview, thanks for letting me know.

I think you should have received an interview letter after you booked the appointment (the ones you see online after getting the appointment). Does it mention anything about sending the documents ahead of time to the consulate ? In any case, talk to the VFS service center and find out the procedures.

Don't forget the e-visa forms !! You must take them with you. Don't confuse this with the DS-156 you had printed out after booking the appointments. The e-visa DS-156 contains three pages (you will see only two pages until you download the form).

Would you mind telling us the foll.

1. Did you make the appointments yourself ?
2. If not, did you father book the appointment himself ?

My father is going to submit the D-156/157 in few days , which will then give him an appointment date , maybe 4-5 months later. Hence, I was just checking, if the supporing docs are to be submitted now, or after he is called for an interview.
According to what I gathered from the forum members, it seems we have to submit at the time of interview ( or may be 4-5 days earlier for Mumbai consulate, which we will find out )
Thanks.

Susma..

Looks like there is some confusion here. This is the procedure you need to follow:

1) Ask your dad to pay Rs.4800/- and Rs.281/- in a designated HDFC branch (These fees are per applicant. If both your parents are applying, they will have to pay 4800+281+4800+281). This is the first and foremost step for any visa application. They will be given a receipt number at the bank.
2) You have to wait for 2 business day for the receipt to get activated and then visit http://vfs-usa.co.in website to fill out an application form and to get an appointment date.
3) As you said, there is a 4-6 month backlog at the consulates. Let's assume you get an appointment for your parents for 15-Mar-07. Then you will send all the documents to your parents in Feb/March (i.e. within 30 to 45 days before the appt).
4) Your father needs to submit the "necessary documents" to the consulate 5 days prior to the appointment. You may refer to the other posts on this thread for the list of documents to be submitted prior to the interview.
5) On 15-Mar-07, your father will go for the interview along with all other support documents. If he is granted the visa, he will be asked to pay Rs.2400/- for the 'visa issuance fee'. This must be in the form of a DD taken in any nationalized bank.

I hope this is clear. Your father doesn't need to submit anything if you have not taken an appt for him yet.
