Hello,
My mom got only 3 months visa at chennai consulate. It seems like at the POE the officer could still stamp it for 6 months.
Are there any documents that my mom should bring or things she can say to increase her chances of getting a 6 month visa. Please guide me.
-Thanks

No documents needed. Usually people get 6 months.

Your mom should buy round trip tickets for 6 months stay and show them to the officer at POE and I am sure she will get 6 months validity (i.e. at least until her return journey date). If your mom can not speak english, write a letter to the officer at POE explaining that you bought tickets with a return date after 6 months and hence you would like the I-94 to be authorized at least until 'so and so' date.
Remember, that she should enter into USA before the 3 month visa expires. Whether she comes right now or after 2 months, the length of stay authorized at POE will not change - and it will most probably be 6 months.

Great! Thanks Jaya..
I would buy a return ticket for 6 months validity. What are the most obvious questions one will be asked at POE?
And would there be any reason for them to give a visa less than 6 months, so that I could prepare my mom accordingly?

Rama,
I am not aware of the kind of questions being asked at POE. It has been more than 6 yrs that my parents/in-laws have visited us. I look forward for others to respond to this query.
Good luck to your mom!!

I think the questions that they would ask at the POE is
Why you would like to spend 6 months in US? What are your plans or how to think u will spend ur time here in country?
If you answer that u will travel, they might ask why you want 6 months to travel - then give the answer depending on the season in which they are coming
Is your daughter pregnant? Where are you going to stay in the US ? Where does your son/son in law work? Does your daughter work? Any grand children?
(These were the questions asked to my parents at POE)
Hope this helps! Good luck

what did she tell the embassy about her length of stay when she applied for the visa? If she said "one month" (or something similar) when she applies for a new visa after her 6 or 12 month stay, well, sounds like somebody lied. What do you think her chances will be for another visa? (yepp, zero)?
