Hi all
I have a question reg. SSN

Can I apply for SSN before Oct 1st (that is before work start date)?
Will the rules differ from state to state?

Thanks

Depends on your present visa status. But if are ona H4 type visa which does not allow SSN then you can file for SSN only after your H1 visa gets activated ie Oct 1st.

SSN as far asi know is federally applied, its rules are same throughout US.

ps: No Legal Advise

Hi All,
This is regarding the same SSN post(H-4 to H-1).Yesterday I went to the SSN office & asked about applying. They said I can't do it b 4 Oct 1st and also said that only when the system is updated I can apply.
My question is
When the system will be updated
* Once I started going for work (In case if I get work little later that OCT)
or
* From Oct 1st

How does this works ?
Plz let me know

Thanks

Generally how long will it take to get SSN?
If it takes couple month to get a job do I still have wait till that time or can I do it on Oct 1st?

Thanks

Avg time is 14 business days. No u can apply on Oct 1. ur project or job has nothing to do with it.
Also u don't need to wait till u get ur SSN. u can always show the receipt that u have applied for SSN and it will be given as soon as i get it.
Most of the companies r fine with the SSN receipt.
In the end, u won't get paid till u give them ur SSN.
