I am new to Us and plan to buy a cell, so my request to all the veterans here:

What to consider before buying the cell phone(and if possible your suggestion with brand names and why you feel so)

and secondly what to keep in mind before going for any service plan.

I would appreciate your few minutes of thinking and typing time for me

regards
amit

Following points can be important:
1. Rates ?
2. What kind of plan , you are choosing ?
3. What kind of network the service provider has , Do they have wide network support through out the USA etc or the scope is limited.

Instrument :

1. It should be Dual mode (Digital and Analog)
2. Easy to handle, and carry.
3.Should have a audio output connector if you want to use hand free device.
4. Battery life.

Choose the plan based on the following factors

What is your own requirements ?
How frequently you will be using it.
It your additional phone , and you have a residence phone.
Whether you travel a lot.
Do you need Advance and costly features like : Browsing the net, checking stock price etc through your mobile set etc.
How fancy instrument you want.

Bottom line is , it should solve your purpose.
Always, comapre the services and shop aroud for the best deal.

Good luck

Just to add to whatever Raj told.. here the cell phones are not like In india.. you need to take a plan. The plan involves a year contract. If you break the contract you will be charged $150 cancelletion charges and they even may add other charges..

So beware I would say take a month to month plan if you do not know for sure how long you are gonna stay here. If you opt for a lower plan and then want to move to a higher plan again you will have to extend the contract by a year!!! so beware , this is a catch sitution. I would say pay $10 more a month and go month to month so that you can disconnect anytime you want or change your plan anytime you want..

Hope this helps..

From my experience T-mobile is the best choice!

To add, it seems unlimited night and weekends start from 12:00AM saturday. i was under the impression that friday after 9pm is unlimited night and weekends. i got billed for the calls i made after 9pm on friday and they told me that unlimited nights are M-Thu after 9pm and weeknd minuts start from Sat 12AM. So basically if i talk after 9pm on friday i still get billed!

any expereinces?
