You can save 100's of dollars by setting up voip in your home in India. I and a few friends of mine have succesfully setup voip with the help of a guy in chennai(He services South India). This guy has come up with a website "www.voipindiacall.com/voip/index.html"
I am posting this assuming it would be helpfull for current or future members in path2usa who are interested in VOIP. BY just spending a few dollars you can talk limitless with your parents and relatives at home.

It really works. We sent packet8 and the adapter is free. We just pay 20$ every month for the service. anytime, anywhere you can reach home and they can call you anytime to any US number they want to. I did not believe this when my husband told me, now i am enjoying. read abt. these phones in forums like desivonage.com and there are lot of other forums if youw ant to take help. google search.

Good to know. I think if it works, we can have lots of ways to play. Actrully no need to have monthly fee at all or a very small money. $20/mon is a lot.

If you have VOIP phone from same company for both places, then you can go for local plan also which will cost you as low as 7.95 / month for unlimited in network

Thanks!

I never tried but lingo provides international numbers for few countries(not for India), so they might have blocked access from other countries without having international number.
There are few other cheaper voip providers also like viatalk.com 9.95/month and zingotel.com 5.95/month, these may work.

Hi Friends,
I have been using VOIP phone to talk in India since last couple of
months. I have the same service (Sunrocket) at both the places i.e. in
India & in US.
The internet plan I had taken in India was I guess for 384 MBPS which has free 410 MBPS usage , now the internet company in India (BSNL)
has billed approximate around 1700 Rs each month for the overusage of mega
bytes (around 1700 MBPS used each month).
I am not sure what I need to do next in order to bring down these bills going forward, will appreciate any suggestions.
Regards,
Chetan

Try this option : disconnect VOIP box from your router or modem when not calling US, when connected VOIP box uses bandwidth.

There are other ways to make VOIP calls and you can ALSO get local dial tone of your parents' phone in India and then dial anywhere in India.
- Using AU 600 with Skype.
- Using SPA3102 with Asterisk Server.
There is huge thread going on at FatWallet.
Good Luck.

- What if you want to call somebody temporary to your friend or somebody?
- VOIP solution provides solution where you can keep in touch with only those who have VOIP phone. It is best solution if you want to talk somebody at fixed location right?
I think you will still need calling card. I have found by experience that Stana card is one of the good ones. No pins to enter and no numbers to push after dialing you will get one US number for each India number...I really liked it. I will cost just 7 cent per min for india call and first 20$ it is even cheaper with doubled credit ( half of it )
You can sign up for free account and if you have referral id you can double your first sign up credit.
You can also recommend StanaCard to your friend and both of you will receive up to$20 of Bonus Credit for FREE! I think if you have good network of friends you should try this...
