I will be going to India after a stay of 45 days in US. Can I take a new camcorder (cost $400) to india without paying any duty that has been bought in US. The seler is ready to provide me a gift coupon as a reciept for this camcorder. Does indiam customs people charge duty on gifted items only?

As a general rule any one can carry any item max upto $250 of its cost without any duty.
In case you are asked to pay the duty, you may have to pay what ever is over $250 that in your case is $150. And you can deal with the customers smartly you may not have to pay anything.

Thanks for the reply. Actually I already bought few small electronic gift items (upto $2 to $13 each) costing around $200 in total. So, the total amount would be app. $600. As you said upto $250 is durty free..any idea how much would they charge as a duty on excess $350.
