I request all the users to keep posting their medications on this thread.

All of us are facing a big problem being here ..in US ...we are putting on fat ...I am sure 80% would agree to this ...busy lives, stress, etc... leads to not taking care of diet and obesity ....

Lets start posting some remedies/solutions for : maintaining weight (no excercises to be talked about) focusing on food habits and or remedies to cut fat .

All I can think of is :

Having Neembu Paani ...it cuts fat ...and if u have one glass warm water, 15mins after ur meals ... it helps reduce fat.

Having more of vegetables and fruits is very essential for all of us.

I have noticed, the milk we get here is a major cause for gaining... dont have too much milk ... reduce it to 1/2 cup or get a low fat one ...

Looks like I am the only one posting threads....
Show me interest and post too ... then lets carry on together ......

I am very particular about what I eat and drink. There has never been a time when I don't see the food lable before I buy the product.I love U.S for being so consicious about ingredients calories, fat, cholestrol and stuff and letting us know what we are about to eat or purchase.

If only we are aware as to how much harm do certain things cause to our body we'll buy the right stuff.

Milk: I never bought anything other than skimmed milk coz I know it has all the nutrients required but no fat.Ofcourse a lot of people don't like the taste so you may want to try with 2% and then slowly move.

Fish: Great qualities, helps lower cholestrol, and keeps your heart healthy.

Meat: Avoid red meat and try and cook it simple and avoid the typical desi style.

Garlic: This is one thing which has endless great qualities and a regular intake can help you with something as simple as common cold to something as big as high blood pressure.Just try and smash one clove in every meal and you are good.

Citrius fruits: All fruits with viatmin C are proven to help lower cholestrol and maintain a healthy heart.Avoid drinking juice as it has sugar and your body requires only certain amount which we anyway get from all veggies and fruits.

Sodium: Everyone has got to watch out for the sodium amount. Our body only requires 2000mg in a day and if you ever look at the lables you'll probably be eating way more in just one dish. Its extremly important to watch out your sodium intake.

We have never shopped for soda, chips, cheetos, french fries, ice cream, popcorn or any sort of junk food.I am not saying everyone must follow this strictly but since we work out for an hour every evening we know how much effort and sweat it takes to burn 300 calories...I really cann't let my efforts go waste with 2 bites of an ice cream;) its just me.

For all paneer lovers it might be a good idea to exchange your paneer masala with tofu once in a while.Paneer is all fat and has very less of nutrition so it might be a good idea.My palak tofu (firm tofu) tastes as amazing as the real paneer

For all the cocktail lovers theres sad news.. cocktails have the highest number of calories and sugar and so you might want to quit drinking margarita as it has 600 cals. You can stick to a light beer or your best bet maybe double vodak/rum with diet coke :D tastes good too.

Last but not at all the least.. all your 'watch what you eat' will go waste if you are not active.I am workaholic ( but at the gym :D ) I love to work out and love the adrenalin rush makes me high:)

I can bet just a little bit of awareness and ditching that laziness will get you great results and when you see results wow.. theres no stopping.

Good Luck

Just a word of caution about the labels. They are based on a 2000 calorie diet for whites. Depending on your weight and race your requirements may be completely different from what is printed on the label. Do NOT look at percentage values, look at absolute values and calculate based on your weight/race.

Milk: I never bought anything other than skimmed milk coz I know it has all the nutrients required but no fat.Ofcourse a lot of people don't like the taste so you may want to try with 2% and then slowly move.

Good points

Citrius fruits: All fruits with viatmin C are proven to help lower cholestrol and maintain a healthy heart.Avoid drinking juice as it has sugar and your body requires only certain amount which we anyway get from all veggies and fruits.

good point about sugar

Sodium: Everyone has got to watch out for the sodium amount. Our body only requires 2000mg in a day and if you ever look at the lables you'll probably be eating way more in just one dish. Its extremly important to watch out your sodium intake.

Indians have been consuming 5000mg per day without problems. Some people say that if your kidneys are working fine then sodium should be OK. Better to avoid excess sodium, but don't worry too much if you are eating a bit more.

For all paneer lovers it might be a good idea to exchange your paneer masala with tofu once in a while.Paneer is all fat and has very less of nutrition so it might be a good idea.My palak tofu (firm tofu) tastes as amazing as the real paneer

Tofu made in the US uses chemicals for thicknening. Try organic tofu.

Here's what I do:

1. Use 100% whole wheat flour (from any regular grocery store's baking aisle) for rotis instead of the flour from Indian stores (which I feel has too much refined flour in it).
2. Developed a taste for brown rice and substitute it often for white rice.
3. Use only organice fruits, vegetables and milk products.
4. Absolutely avoid products that have high fructose corn syrup in them. From what I understand, it is a highly refined sugar which is cheaper than regular sugar for manufacturers to use but not good for your body.
5. Use only cold-pressed, extra virgin olive oil for cooking.
6. Drink atleast 10 glasses of good old tap water each day.

Hipka, that was very useful advise about the calorie intake label!

Finally ..no one answered so I asked my best frend - My Mom :) ... hw to mk sprouts ..
Take a bowl or a vessel and put moong dal in it and pour water such that dal is dipped.
Keep this overnight in a place where light doesnt reach them.
Next morning tk the dal and tie it in a piece of cloth - ..till evening sprouts shall be ready to serve or eat.
PS: Sprouts are ready - you will know this once u see a tail like coming through them
Serve sprouts with finely chopped onions,tomatoes...lemon and Corainder leaves.
Very healthy if had as breakfast.
All the Best !!
Do let me know if you try this...I did ...its yummy.:p

Curd
"Get Plain yoghurt from market"

-Boil some milk (this Qty should be the Qty of curd you desire)
-Let Boil
-When boiled.. keep aside to warm, don't let it cool too much ..it should be warm
-now add 1/2 cup Plain Yoghurt to the warm milk & also add 1/2 cup cold milk to this.
Keep this container in a place like, Shelf which u hardly open or cooking range-which is below the Gas stove.
Leave it there in night and by morning you will find nice curd.
You can keep this in fridge and have it later or even then.

And now Panneer
Boil some milk ...when it is half boiled ... add 1cup of yoghurt to it and keep the Heat on medium or low, (stir when required) don't allow the milk to burn from beneath....after a while you will notice paneer separating from milk... so now u will have 1/2 vessel filled with water and 1/2 with Paneer... separate the paneer from the water, water is of no use ... then take a clean cloth and tie the paneer in the cloth, so that the water in the paneer falls off..you can tie the cloth to the tap in kitchen basin, then u can use this paneer after 5mins or keep in fridge and have later..

I Hope you will enjoy curd and paneer ...

During summer time, make the best of grilling, you'll enjoy the weather as well as heathy food. During winter, you can get the gerogeman's grill which can be used indoor's, an appliance you plug it in. Better yet use the oven under your stove.

Make grilled mutton, chicken, fish, shrimp, veggies kebab's, grilled alu, capsicum, paneer, onion, sprinkle with chat masala, u got a party going ! Marinte if u'd like with olive oil, basically anything u lke. I also use oil spray a lot in my cooking. I ONLY buy skim milk.

The trick that does for me in moderation of everything. Depriving only makes u crave for stuff more. If u feel like eating donut or bagel with chesse cream, try to savor the taste in one or two bites, eat slowly.

I never buy chips, and junk food unless there's a party. After the party i give it away to people with kids who enjoy that food and have tons of fruits at home. I've read in an article that cantaloupe in one fruit that burns fat while digesting in the body.

I work out but it get's monotonus for me, so i've enrolled in yoga, now i have fun meeting people, new routine and still go to gym. One day yoga, one day gym, one day i walk in our community.

Can someone post a few recipes for Pickles (Achar) that we can make in this cold weather. I know that most of the pickles are to be kept in sunlight for few days. So, any recipes that can avoid that exercise would be great.

For Acidity;

Take some cold milk + plain soda (tasteless)
mix both in such a way, that it comes to half a glass ... drink this in a gulp and you will start burping away your acidity :) Hope this helps.
