Do 60 yrs old people need to go for visa appointment/interview?

Hi

I am planning for my parents to visit US. My father's age is 60 yrs and my mother's age is 52yrs.
So, I have a question, Is it compulsory for 60 yrs old people to take a visa appointment and to attend the visa interview in chennai US consulate or is there any drop-box facility for these people? What about my mother?

Pls help me out and let me know.
