My parents-in-law plan to travel to USA in April 2007. Few questions:
1) Can they give an interview in October 2006 and still travel in April 2007? The reason I'd like for them to take the interview in October 2006 with the possibility of giving the interview again (if they fail in the first attempt)

2) What is the time frame between 2 interviews (if they fail in the first attempt)?

3) My father-in-law and mother-in-law are retired. Would that be a problem for them to get the visa?

4) They do not have enough property (except for one flat) to show. Would that be sufficient to get the visa?

5) If they self-sponsor their trip, are the chances more of getting the visa or if I sponsor their trip, would there be more chances of getting the visa?

6) If they pass the interview, what is the result? Do they get a 6 month visa or 1 year visa or 10 year visa?

7) When does the clock start ticking? I mean, if they get the 6 month visa in October 2006, does the 6 month time start from the interview date or does the time start from the travel date?

I know I might be asking some of the questions again, but couldnt find some of the answers on other threads.

Would appreciate your responses.

Yes, they can, depending on the Visa duration they gets.

2) What is the time frame between 2 interviews (if they fail in the first attempt)?

by rule, they can apply again in 3 days. But its good to wait atleast 3-4 months before trying again.
3) My father-in-law and mother-in-law are retired. Would that be a problem for them to get the visa?

No. Ties to homeland is the key

4) They do not have enough property (except for one flat) to show. Would that be sufficient to get the visa?

Show other family ties and its good to have some deposits too.

5) If they self-sponsor their trip, are the chances more of getting the visa or if I sponsor their trip, would there be more chances of getting the visa?

Slef-sponsoring is better if they have solid finance. But seems they have very limited finance??

6) If they pass the interview, what is the result? Do they get a 6 month visa or 1 year visa or 10 year visa?

Its upto the officer to decide. People gets anywhere from 6 months to 10 yrs.

7) When does the clock start ticking? I mean, if they get the 6 month visa in October 2006, does the 6 month time start from the interview date or does the time start from the travel date?

The visa validity begins on the approval date. So, if they get 6 month visa in october 1, their visa is valid until March 31 (aprox). They can enter USA any time before March 31 and their duration of stay in USA is determined at the POE. People normally get 3-6 months there..

dahlia2105, thanks for your response.

coming back to your answers for question (4) and (7)
(4) Family ties - Does this mean having son and daughter in India or something else.
(4) Deposit - How much of a deposit do you think should be good enough for getting the visa?
(7) If they get the 6 month visa on 1 October 2006 which is valid until 31 March 2007. And if they travel on March 20 2007, dont they have to leave USA within 10 days or are you saying that they would get 3-6 month extension at the POE.

Yes. also other family members such as ur grandma/grandpa...

Self sponsoring needs very solid finance (over 10 lakhs?). I think its better if u can sponsor.

(7) If they get the 6 month visa on 1 October 2006 which is valid until 31 March 2007. And if they travel on March 20 2007, dont they have to leave USA within 10 days or are you saying that they would get 3-6 month extension at the POE.

Evenif they come to USA on March 30, 2007, they can get 3-6 months on their I94 that determines the stay in USA.

Hope this helps
