Our Daughter is born in USA recently. We both are indian citizens. We are planning to go back to india permanently in the near future. We would like to retain the US citizenship of our daughter and Indian citizenship too. But by the Indian citizenship act of 1955, what We came to understand is, one should register their birth in the local Indian consulate and apply for Birth certificate before applying for US passport. We are planning to register her birth in Indian consulate. Also planning to get an Indian birth certificate before applying US passport for her. Are we going in the right direction? Could anyone please tell us about the details how to go about it. I am not getting enough information from SFO Indian consulate website regarding this matter. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your daughter is a US citizen by the virtue of being born there. First apply and get her US Birth Certificate, US Passport, SSN etc. Then apply for PIO at an Indian Embassy.

Your daughter being an American Citizen, you will have to spend more on her fees, if you plan to start her education in India.
