To my utter disappointment, my parents' tourist visa application was refused at their interview today at Chennai consulate. This, despite the fact that they have visited U.S. twice before (on a 5-year multiple entry tourist visa that expired back in 2002) and in both previous visits, they never over-stayed or even applied for extension. They returned back to India before the expiry of the I-94 stamp.
My parents were frustrated that the interview officer was rude, did not even ask many questions or even look at the bundle of documents they had including my support documents. The main question he asked apparently was whether I was the only son, to which they truthfully replied "yes" and that was enough for him to reject. If this is such an issue, how could they get the visa before and visited me twice...how is it now suddenly they are a "potential immigrant" - when they demonstrated they are not in both their previous visits.
Their rejection was under 214(B) category: Intending Immigrant provision.
Do the visa chances improve if my mom and dad applied for interview separately?
In other words, mom applies first and says dad will stay over and not come -- Strong reason for mom return back to India.
Next, at dad's interview, if asked mom also has visa --- he can say, right now, only one can go to US because of committments here. He has decided to go and mom will stay back. So, he needs the visa but mom (even though she has got it) may not use it.
Will following the above method increase the chances for both to get visas...independently? What documents/letters can I provide to ensure their re-application is successful and how soon can they re-apply?
Experienced folks, please help. Thanks.
